Sociology faculty at Rice have taught more than 12,000 undergraduate students over the past 60 years, and over 600 of these students majored in the discipline. The undergraduate program allows considerable latitude in pursuing personal interests while ensuring familiarity with core sociological theories and research methods. Faculty members often collaborate on research projects with students. Rice Sociology students have received a variety of honors, such as Rhodes, Truman, and Fulbright Scholarships, Watson Fellowships, and two students have been elected president of the Rice University Student Association. Rice Sociology majors go on to prestigious schools of law, medicine, public health, public policy, and are accepted at top sociology Ph.D. programs. To date more than 30 sociology alumni from Rice have gone on to complete a PhD in sociology, many of whom now hold tenure-track positions at schools across the country.
