Daniel H. Bowen is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC) and the Department of Sociology. He completed his PhD in education policy at the University of Arkansas in 2013, and holds a master’s degree in education in addition to a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Notre Dame. Prior to working on his PhD he taught middle and high school social studies for three years through Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education Service through Teaching program. His research examines the impacts that education reforms have on teacher quality, both in terms of the motivations and perspectives of current teachers as well as how these policies influence the composition of the workforce. In his dissertation he incorporates methods and measures from experimental economics to analyze the affects that performance-based pay could have on the attraction to the teaching profession. Other ongoing research includes an evaluation of the educational value of school visits to cultural institutions. More specifically, he has examined the causal relationship between visits to an art museum and the growth and development of students’ abilities to critically think about the arts. This research aims to contribute to an expansion of the types of outcomes examined in the evaluation of educational policies and interventions. Bowen’s research has been covered in Education Week, Huffington Post, Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, Miami Herald, and Kansas City Star.
